SUONENJOKI

The town of Suonenjoki is situated 50 km southwest of Kuopio on highway 9. Kuopio Airport lies 65 km away and the town can also be easily reached by train or bus.

Suonenjoki is known as ‘the Strawberry Town of Finland’, and the strawberry leaf displayed on the town’s coat of arms depicts the importance of strawberry farming to the district. Each year in July, a big Strawberry Carnival is arranged in Suonenjoki. The year 2003 is an exception, and instead Suonenjoki hosts a large-scale annual religious meeting of the Finnish Pietists.

You can stay in a hotel, inns and holiday cottages in Suonenjoki. Organised activities related to nature and the lakes are available. Places to visit include the Working Family Museum Home from the 1950s in Kolikkoinmäki, which is a sawmill workers’ housing area situated in the village of Iisvesi. The Suonenjoki Local History Museum is housed in a 19th-century granary and comprises around 1,800 artefacts. There is also a public swimming bath in Suonenjoki, and in winter a network of illuminated ski trails can be found in the neighbourhood of the Vanhamäki Activity Centre. The Lehtopuu Factory Shop stocks hand-painted wooden products and ceramic pictures.
