Rautavaara, the northernmost district of the region, is situated 102 km from Kuopio, 85 km from Kuopio Airport and 102 km from the nearest railway station. Rautavaara offers peaceful wilderness-like surroundings and good basic amenities.

Tiilikka National Park with its duckboards, primeval pines and sandy beaches provides a tranquil retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle. The park is suitable for both day trips and camping out. Its lakes, pools and rivers abound with fish. The best spots for lure fishing can be found along the Rivers Keyrityn-Puntinjoki and Tiilikanjoki. Arctic cloudberries thrive on the bogs of the national park, just waiting to be picked.

Kipari Hill dominates the horizon in Rautavaara. The viewpoint on top of the hill can be reached by snowmobile along marked routes. There is also an airfield in Rautavaara providing facilities for gliding and hang-gliding. Small aircraft can land on and take off from the airfield.
