Leppävirta, the southernmost district of the region, lies 50 km from Kuopio. The nearest airport is situated 35 km away in Varkaus and the nearest railway station 24 km away.

Leppävirta has won several awards as the district possessing the best image in Finland. It is well-known for its Sorsakoski Works manufacturing the famous Hackman stainless-steel cookware. Leppävirta is a scenic lakeland district. It is conveniently situated by the arterial highway 5 and can also be reached by boat along the waterways of the Saimaa lake district. Visitor moorings are provided. The Vesileppis Spa Hotel offers a wide range of facilities, including restaurants, a leisure spa, physiotherapy services and an indoor ice-rink. The skiing and multifunction arena Kymppi Areena was opened on autumn 2004 and it's in the immediate vicinity of the spa hotel and the ice rink, giving the access to their many services.The experience begins from the hotel reception with a 30 meter descent into the bedrock beneath. The district also has a good selection of holiday cottages for hire. Leisure activities available in Leppävirta include golf, horse-riding, canoeing, fishing and cross-country skiing.

The Eeron Piha Domestic Animal Farm and Pajaharju Farm are delightful places to visit for families with children. If you fancy dancing the night away, head for the Tulenliekki Dance Pavilion. The Unnukka Tourist Centre houses the factory shops of Designor and Kerman Savi, which stock high-quality Finnish design.
