The rural district of Kaavi is situated 60 km from Kuopio and 95 km from Joensuu. Kuopio Airport lies 45 km away.

Kaavi attracts visitors both in summer and winter. You can stay in high-standard holiday cottages or comfortable farmhouses amidst unspoilt Finnish lakeland. Kaavi also offers good shopping and restaurant facilities as well as various organised activities. There are visitor moorings for boaters in Kaavi and in Luikonlahti, which can be reached along marked routes from the main waterways of the Saimaa lake district. In winter the district has well-maintained cross-country ski trails, and the Maarianvaara Ski Centre has slopes suitable for both beginners and more experienced skiers.
